Day 1
Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík
Overnight: Reykjavík
Start here

Day 1: Arrival & Reykjavík

  • Climb Hallgrímskirkja tower for the best panoramic view of the city and surrounding mountains
  • Walk Laugavegur and explore the colourful downtown streets and shops
  • Visit Harpa Concert Hall on the waterfront for its spectacular glass architecture
  • Explore the Old Harbour for restaurants, whale-watching boats, and views across Faxaflói Bay

Gullfoss waterfall tumbling into its canyon
Overnight: Selfoss
Drive: 300 km from Reykjavík

Day 2: Golden Circle

  • Stand at Þingvellir where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are visibly pulling apart
  • Watch Strokkur erupt every 5–10 minutes, shooting boiling water 30 metres into the air
  • Marvel at Gullfoss — the golden falls — thundering into a dramatic canyon
  • Stop at the Secret Lagoon in Flúðir, a natural hot spring less crowded than the Blue Lagoon

Seljalandsfoss waterfall on Iceland's south coast
Overnight: Vík
Drive: 120 km from Selfoss

Day 3: South Coast West

  • Walk behind Seljalandsfoss — one of the few waterfalls you can step behind the curtain of water
  • Discover Gljúfrabúi, a hidden waterfall tucked inside a narrow canyon around the corner
  • Climb the staircase beside Skógafoss for a ridge view and hike into the highlands
  • Walk Reynisfjara black sand beach and see the Reynisdrangar sea stacks from a safe distance

Day 4: South Coast East

  • Hike to Svartifoss waterfall in Skaftafell, framed by dark hexagonal basalt columns
  • Boat among calving icebergs on Jökulsárlón — Iceland's deepest glacial lagoon
  • Walk Diamond Beach where translucent icebergs wash up on jet-black volcanic sand
  • Watch seals rest on floating ice floes at the lagoon outlet

Seyðisfjörður town and fjord in the East
Overnight: Egilsstaðir
Drive: 260 km from Höfn

Day 5: East Fjords

  • Drive winding coastal roads that cut in and out of narrow fjords with barely another car in sight
  • See the Eggin í Gleðivík sculpture — 34 oversized granite eggs representing local bird species
  • Detour to Seyðisfjörður: colourful wooden houses, a blue church, and a thriving arts community
  • Spot reindeer grazing in the valleys between the fjords

Lake Mývatn in northern Iceland
Overnight: Mývatn
Drive: 200 km from Egilsstaðir

Day 6: Mývatn Area

  • Wander through Dimmuborgir's labyrinth of twisted lava pillars and volcanic arches
  • Walk the Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters, formed by steam explosions rather than eruptions
  • Hike the rim of Hverfjall, a 1,000-year-old tephra crater with panoramic views of the Mývatn basin
  • Soak in the Mývatn Nature Baths, a geothermal pool overlooking the lake

Goðafoss waterfall in north Iceland
Overnight: Akureyri
Drive: 100 km from Mývatn

Day 7: North Iceland

  • Watch Goðafoss — the waterfall where the lawspeaker cast his Norse idols into the falls in 1000 AD
  • Stroll Akureyri's pedestrian downtown, botanical garden, and striking hilltop church
  • Enjoy an ice cream at Brynja, a beloved local institution since 1939
  • Drive to Dalvík for whale watching in Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord

Hvítserkur basalt rock stack in northwest Iceland
Overnight: Borgarnes
Drive: 280 km from Akureyri

Day 8: Northwest

  • Detour to Hvítserkur, a 15-metre basalt rock stack rising from the sea like a drinking dragon
  • Visit the Vatnsnes seal colony — one of Iceland's best spots to watch harbour and grey seals
  • Pass through Blönduós on the Blanda River heading west through rolling farmland
  • Arrive in the Borgarfjörður region, perfectly positioned for Snæfellsnes the next day
