Start Smaller for iPhone

Support

Quick answers for the app that turns a task that feels too big into one tiny step, with no account, streaks or network.

Quick start

  1. 1Write or say what feels too big in the box on the first screen, then tap Find my first step. Or tap Or just help me move, or choose one of the common situations.
  2. 2Do the one step on the screen. The timer is only a guide and never moves on without you. Tap the timer to pause.
  3. 3Tap Done when you have done it. The next small step appears, or the app tells you that you made a start.
  4. 4If a step is too much, tap Stuck? to make it smaller, try another step or take a moment to ground yourself. Stop here ends the session at any time.

Does Start Smaller need internet, an account or a subscription?

No. Start Smaller is bought once on the App Store and has no account, subscription, in-app purchase, advertising or analytics. It works fully in Airplane Mode.

Why does it only show one step?

Seeing a whole list is often what makes a task feel impossible. One small physical step is easier to start, and starting is what tends to get things moving.

The steps don't fit my task.

Tap Stuck?, then Try another step for a different one, or Make it smaller. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, steps can be made for exactly what you wrote. Otherwise the app uses ready-made steps for 25 everyday situations, and a general movement starter for anything else.

Voice input says it isn't available.

Start Smaller only uses speech recognition on the device, never on a server. If on-device recognition isn't available for your iPhone's language, type the task instead. If you turned off microphone or speech access, turn it back on in iOS Settings under Privacy & Security.

How do I keep the step on my Lock Screen?

It's on by default. In Start Smaller's settings, under Keep my step nearby, make sure Lock Screen & Dynamic Island is on. Live Activities must also be allowed for Start Smaller in the iOS Settings app. While a step is active it appears on the Lock Screen and, on iPhones that have it, in the Dynamic Island, with a Done button. iOS may ask for Face ID or your passcode before Done runs.

Why did the sound or pulses stop?

Sound and haptic pulses are optional. Turn sound on in Start Smaller's settings under Ambient sound (Play during my steps). It starts when you begin or continue a step, and stops when you pause, stop or finish, during a call, when headphones are unplugged, and a few minutes after a step's timer runs out; continue the step to start it again. iOS pauses haptics while the app is in the background.

I bought Start Smaller on another iPhone. Do I have to pay again?

No. On the new iPhone, open the App Store, go to your account's purchase history and download it again. Paid apps download again free of charge on any device signed in with the same Apple Account.

Important

Start Smaller is a gentle self-help tool for getting started. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose or treat any condition. The pulse rhythm is an adjustable pace, not a measurement of your heartbeat. If you are struggling, please talk to someone you trust or a health professional.
