Nightfan for iPhone

Support

Quick answers for the honest sleep sound machine: 26 sounds, a Sunset fade timer and a crib check, with no subscription, account or network.

Quick start

  1. 1Open Nightfan and pick a sound from the library. Noise and fan sounds are generated live; rain, nature, indoor and nursery sounds are long studio loops.
  2. 2Press play and set the volume. Every sound is mastered to the same loudness, so switching sounds never jumps in level.
  3. 3Set a sleep timer. Leave Sunset on and the volume fades to silence over the final five minutes instead of cutting off.
  4. 4Lock your iPhone. Nightfan keeps playing with the screen off and answers the lock screen, Control Center and earbud controls.

Why did the sound stop when my phone rang?

A phone call or another app taking over audio pauses Nightfan and freezes the countdown where it was. When the call ends, playback resumes and the timer continues from the same point. Nothing is reset.

Why did playback pause when I unplugged my headphones?

Unplugging wired headphones pauses playback, as iOS expects, so a quiet room is not suddenly filled with sound from the speaker. Press play to continue. Connecting AirPods during a session hands the sound over to them without a pause.

Do the sounds repeat?

The noise, fan, rain and rolling-thunder sounds are synthesized in real time on your iPhone and never repeat. The recorded sounds are loops of one to six minutes with the seam crossfaded away, so there is no dip or restart at the wrap.

What does Sunset do?

With Sunset on, the final five minutes of the timer fade the volume down to silence. Turn Sunset off if you prefer a hard stop when the timer ends.

Does Nightfan need internet, an account or a subscription?

No. Nightfan is paid once on the App Store and has no account, subscription, in-app purchase, advertising or analytics. The app makes no network requests and works fully in Airplane Mode.

I bought Nightfan on another iPhone. Do I have to pay again?

No. On the new iPhone, open the App Store, go to your account's purchase history and download Nightfan again. Paid apps download again free of charge on any device signed in with the same Apple Account.

How does the crib check work?

The crib check uses the iPhone's built-in microphone in measurement mode to show an estimated sound-level range against the limit you set. Play a sound, lay the phone where your baby's head will be, and read the level. Audio is metered in memory and discarded; nothing is recorded, saved or sent anywhere. The reading is an estimate from an uncalibrated microphone, not a laboratory measurement.

The crib check says it needs microphone access.

Open the iPhone Settings app, choose Privacy & Security, then Microphone, and turn on Nightfan. The crib check also refuses any input that is not the built-in microphone, so disconnect a wired headset before measuring.

Why does one sound seem louder than another?

It should not. Every sound is mastered to the same integrated loudness, with the lullaby set slightly lower for the nursery. If a sound is clearly out of line on your device, email the sound name and your iPhone model and it will be checked.

Which settings does Nightfan remember?

Your last sound, volume, timer length, Sunset setting, night-vision palette and crib-check limit are restored the next time you open the app. Playback never starts on its own; you always press play.

What is the best setup for all-night use?

Lock the screen and leave the phone on its charger. Nightfan runs a small audio engine in the background and the interface is true black for OLED screens, so a locked phone by the bed is the intended way to use it.

Important information for the nursery

Nightfan is a sound machine, not a medical device, and it makes no health claim. The crib check shows an estimated sound level so you can compare it with a limit you choose. Published guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics is to place any sound machine as far from the crib as possible, play it at the lowest volume that works, and limit how long it runs. Follow the advice of your own pediatrician.
