Facet 3D scanner

Support

Help with capture, saved models and exports. Results depend on your device, subject, lighting and coverage.

Quick start

  1. Open Facet on a supported device and choose Start a scan or New scan.
  2. Choose your subject and surface. Read the recommended mode, expectations and warnings before starting.
  3. Allow camera access and follow the on-screen capture guidance. Keep the subject still and move slowly.
  4. Finish capture and keep Facet open while it processes and saves. Open the saved scan to inspect it or share an available file.

Which devices can scan?

Facet requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. Space mode needs a device with LiDAR scene reconstruction, such as a compatible iPhone Pro or iPad Pro. Object mode also depends on Apple's Object Capture and on-device photogrammetry support. Facet checks each mode on your device and shows when it is unavailable. A Pro name alone does not guarantee support: the iPhone 11 Pro, for example, has no LiDAR. The Simulator cannot verify capture.

Should I choose Object or Space?

Object mode uses camera images to reconstruct a textured USDZ model of a single subject you can walk around. Space mode uses LiDAR geometry and camera colour for a mesh of a room or larger subject, with USDZ, OBJ and PLY export. Space colour is stored per vertex, and appearance can differ between viewers. Read the app's advice for your subject and finish; a complete or dimensionally precise result is not guaranteed.

Why are there holes or rough surfaces?

Glossy paint and metal reflect their surroundings, glass is transparent, and matte-black surfaces absorb light and provide little camera detail. These materials can produce holes, noise or missing geometry in either mode. Thin parts, hidden surfaces and moving subjects can also be missed. Use even light, overlap your views and inspect the result before relying on it. Facet cannot restore surfaces the sensors did not capture.

The camera will not start. What can I check?

Check the permission message in Facet. In your device's Settings, open Privacy & Security, then Camera, and allow Facet if it is listed. Camera access can also be restricted by Screen Time or device management. Return to Facet and try again. Camera permission cannot add a missing LiDAR sensor or enable an unsupported capture mode.

What should I do if tracking is lost?

Move slowly back toward an area you already scanned and point the camera at a well-lit surface with visible detail. Follow the warning in Facet and wait for tracking to recover before continuing. Avoid fast movement, very dark rooms and featureless or reflective surfaces. If tracking cannot recover, stop and start a new scan when conditions improve.

Processing failed or saving stopped. Is my scan saved?

A scan is saved only when Facet confirms it and it appears in the library. Keep the app open during processing and allow time for larger captures. If an error appears, follow the offered retry, close or Keep files action. Make space on your device if storage is low, and let a hot device cool before retrying. Files from an interrupted or failed capture may remain in Files even when no scan appears in the library; their presence does not guarantee a usable model or that processing can resume.

Where are my files and source photos?

In Files, open Browse, then On My iPhone or On My iPad, then Facet and Scans. Each scan has its own folder. Object source images are kept in its Capture folder for use with compatible reconstruction tools on a Mac. You can also copy files using computer file sharing. Copy important files before editing or moving them outside Facet; moving or deleting a model in Files can make the app's preview or share action unavailable.

How do I share or inspect a model?

Open a saved scan and use the share control beside an available format. Choose a destination in the system share sheet, or copy the file from Files. USDZ can be previewed with Apple's Quick Look; other software may support OBJ or PLY. Check the receiving tool's format support and inspect orientation, scale and colour after importing. The size shown in Facet describes the scan's bounding box and is not a calibrated measurement.

How do I delete a scan or recover missing files?

Open a saved scan, choose Delete and confirm. This removes its local files, including Object source images. If deletion fails, read the message and retry. Unsaved folders from interrupted captures or Keep files may need separate removal in Files. If the library is unreadable, scan folders remain available for recovery; copy those files before taking further action. Recovery depends on what remains on your device or in your own backups. There is no Facet server copy.

Does Facet need internet, and are scans backed up?

Scanning and reconstruction work on your device without an account or internet connection. Facet has no analytics, advertising, cloud reconstruction or app-operated sync. Its saved files can be included in iCloud or computer backups according to your settings. Destinations you select when sharing may use the internet. Deleting a local scan does not delete shared copies or backups. Deleting the app removes local app data; offloading it keeps documents and data.

Contact support

Include your device model, OS version, Facet version, capture mode and the error message or steps that led to the problem. Do not attach private scans or camera images unless you want to share them.
